A suspended ceiling dominated the shop space so I decided to turn it into a feature - the Boxscape installation is aligned with the ceiling grid and the slate flooring also mirrors this pattern so they appear to connect and flow into one another. I then created a composition with the boxes so that they created negative spaces for the bigger or wall mounted products and house the others in darkened niches like colourful jewels.

"Making clever use of the original features of the shop space, the new Boxscape installation by Maidment is made up of dark-grey valchromat box units with black flocked vacuum-formed interiors. The cubes are assembled to form the cashiers desk and storage as well as providing recesses, negative spaces and display areas to house Mathmos playful and colourful lighting. The darkened shop window is a 3D pixalated display using a grid of boxes of varying depths, featuring graphics. The window provides passers with a taste of what is inside and connects the space with Mathmos global online store".

Mathmos MD, Cressida Granger said of the new showroom:
"We are delighted that Simon Maidment is designing our shop installation. Simon has worked as a design consultant with Mathmos for many years now, and has a real understanding of our products and brand. His Boxscape concept integrates cleverly with the new space and sets off our range to full effect. I am very excited about the move; after ten years on Old Street I am ready for a change. The bottom end of Kingsland Road is a really vibrant spot and is changing fast; it feels like both a good investment and a great new home for Mathmos."
